Richard (Dick) John Hellewell was born in Salt Lake City on November 23, 1933 to Esther Clawson and Glen Caffall. He was later adopted by his real father, Joseph Hellewell, and proudly carried his surname throughout his life. Dick had four sisters—Beverly, LaRae, Sherry, and Barbara—as well as one brother Jerry.
Dick married his high-school sweetheart, Jan Sutherland. They were married for over 70 years and built (sometimes literally brick by brick) homes in Utah, Texas, Utah again, Texas one more time, Colorado, and finally Utah for a third and final time. The couple had three children, Lynda Kay, Debra Ann, and Richard Curt.
Richard was a gregarious extrovert that loved people and never met a stranger: he truly enjoyed social gatherings and loved to tell stories, recite play-on-word jokes, and even recant long poems over a campfire. He was full of energy and enjoyed taking long walks. He liked to work with his hands, which started when he was a junior bricklayer with his father and lasted throughout his life with his work as a stained-glass artisan. His work can be seen in the homes of many friends and family and in the Philadelphia LDS Temple.
Richard was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Days Saints and served in four LDS temples- Dallas, Texas, Denver, Colorado, Provo, Utah, and Payson ,Utah.
He passed away at the age of 91 on March 10, 2025 in Jerome, Idaho. He is survived by two sisters, Sherry (Ed) Sears and Barbara (Leon) Crochett; his daughters Lynda (Noy) Sparks, and Debby (Ed) King; his son, Ric (Nancy) Hellewell, as well as eight grandchildren—Noy, Melissa, Harley, Janna, Katie, Jim, Richard, and David—and 24 great grandchildren, ranging in age from 24 years to 5 months old.
He was preceded in death by his sweetheart, Jan Hellewell; his parents, his brother, his two sisters, Beverly and LaRae; as well as his grandson, Mark; and his great-grandson, Julian. We know they were there to help welcome him home. It was a long three and a half years without his wife, and we are so happy for Dick that they are finally together again.
