Twin Falls- Orivel D. Call, 93, of Twin Falls and formerly of Hazelton, died Saturday October 3, 2015, at his home.
Orivel was born into this mortal life on November 2, 1921, in Rigby, Idaho, the sixth of eight children born to John Omer Call and Matilda Dinsdale Call. He attended schools in Rigby where, amongst other things, he excelled at football. By the end of his high school years, World War II had commenced and like other young men in his community he had a desire to serve his country. Orivel enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942 and was stationed in the South Pacific, working as a Seabee, constructing landing strips on several islands in the area.
Following the war, Orivel returned to Rigby and worked at Idaho Falls Bonded Produce. Through mutual friends, Orivel met the love of his life Joye Terry, from Idaho Falls. They dated for about a year and were married in Idaho Falls in 1947. They were sealed for time and all eternity in 1965 in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.
Following the war, the veterans, had the opportunity to homestead land. Orivel and Joye drew a farm on the Hunt Minidoka Relocation Project, North of Hazelton. In 1949, they drew their farm on the second drawing. They cleared the land, plowed the fields, dug the ditches, killed the rattlesnakes and turned a barracks, obtained from the Minidoka Relocation Camp, in to a home. The power company was putting in the power-lines and the young couple was not slated to have their power turned until the company had finished the Mile. On a bet with the linesman, they agreed to hook up Orivel's power if he could climb his own power pole. To their surprise and with Joye and a new baby looking on, he shinnied right up the pole and the young couple had their power hooked up so they could have water and electricity for their home.
Starting with two cows that he owned before he enlisted, Orivel bought four more from his Dad and began his dairy business. They continued to grow their herd, milking as many as 150 Holstein cows. They grew feed on the farm and additional hay was purchased from the neighbors. The farming operation consisted of pigs, chickens, peacocks, dairy cows, horses and sheep. Farming was a family affair, with Daughters Pat, Linda, Dianne and son Doug all pitching in to get the work done.
They farmed, until they retired to Twin Falls in 1997. Their enduring legacy is their children and the work ethic that was instilled in them at an early age.
Orivel, passed away peacefully on his grandson Shaun's Birthday, 29 days shy of his 94 th birthday.
Orivel is survived by Joye, his wife of 67 years, Patricia Hinton, Rexburg Idaho; Douglas and Kathy Call, Bothwell, Utah; Linda and Steven Larsen, West Jordan, Utah; Dianne and Ron Rogers, Eden, Idaho. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by all of his siblings and one grandson, Shaun Call.
Funeral services will be held Thursday October 8, 2015, at the Hazelton LDS Chapel, 531 Middleton Avenue, at 2:00 PM with a visitation one hour prier. A Graveside service will be at the Hazelton City Cemetery following the funeral. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Farnsworth Mortuary of Jerome.
