Larry Lee Culver, born December 31, 1946, in Yates Center, Kansas, passed away August 15, 2024 in Twin Falls, Idaho after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. He was the beloved son of Lawrence Clifton Culver and Murel Irene Shepard and the oldest of seven children.
At the age of nine, Larry's family made a memorable journey, driving through winter weather to Ketchum, Idaho, where both parents found employment at the Sun Valley Inn. In Ketchum, they also founded a small church, nurturing Larry's strong sense of community and faith. Larry attended Wood River High School until he joined the Navy at the age of 17, serving aboard the U.S.S. Pickaway during the Vietnam War. During his training to be a machinist mate in Great Lakes, Illinois, Larry met Sandra Spencer on a street corner in Clearwater, Minnesota, a town with a population of just 270 residents. After only four days of spending time together, Larry asked Sandra to wait for him, and they married on December 10, 1965.
The couple welcomed their first daughter, Leigh Ann on September 27, 1968. Their second daughter, Christina Marie followed on June 20, 1970, both were born in Salem, Oregon. In 1971, they moved to Jerome, Idaho. Their surprise third daughter, Rebecca Lynn, was born on March 25, 1981.
Larry began working with the Jerome City Street Department in July 1983. He dedicated 23 years to the department, retiring as the Public Works Field Manager in 2006. Larry also served on the volunteer fire department for 21 years, retiring at the rank of captain. Larry had a deep love for the outdoors, particularly hunting and fishing. After retiring, he dedicated his time to capturing the beauty of the people and places he cherished through photography. He always enjoyed a good yard sale or thrift store, finding joy in the treasures of everyday life.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents. He leaves behind his loving wife of 58 years, Sandra; and his three daughters, Leigh Ann Culver-Rice (Dave), Christy McBride (Dave), both of whom live in Jerome; and Rebecca Finley (Jason) of Wendell. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and his six siblings: Rita Robinson, Robert Culver, Pam Human, Leon Culver, Marsha Culver and Steve Culver.
Larry will be remembered for his service to the community, his dedication to his family, and the love he shared with all who knew him.
A Celebration of Larry’s Life will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, August 24, 2024, at Farnsworth Mortuary, 1343 S Lincoln Ave, Jerome. A graveside service will follow with full military honors at the Jerome Cemetery.
