Joyce Lavene Cowling

Joyce Lavene Cowling passed peacefully from this life into the arms of Jesus on September 9, 2023, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Twin Falls. Joyce was born on September 18, 1939, to Forrest and Elida Boyd, in Jerome, Idaho. At home she joined an older sister Barbara and was followed by her younger siblings, Alice and Charles.

Raised on farms in Jerome and Filer, she spent most of her childhood in Idaho. Later, her family moved to Butte, Montana, where she met and married Frank Cooney. Together, they had six children and lived in Montana, New Mexico, and finally Sacramento, California in 1965 where they settled. They divorced in 1970.

Joyce later married Bill Cowling. They lived in Sacramento until they moved to Montello, Nevada in 1995. Bill passed away December 24, 2001. Since then, Joyce had lived in Burley, Montello, Jerome, and in California. At the time of her death, she was a resident of Ashley Manor in Jerome, Idaho.

Joyce had several occupations including server, cook, cosmetologist, restaurant manager, and parts store manager. She owned and operated her own hair salon in Elk Grove for a few years. Her hobbies included fishing, raising a garden, and reading. She also loved watching Jeopardy and completing crossword puzzles. She was a lifelong fan of the Oakland A’s and loved watching baseball and golf. She had many friends and rarely met a stranger.

She is survived by her children, Frank (Patti) Cooney, Tom (Tammie) Cooney, Caroline (Gary) McDonald, Sam (Anita) Cooney, Annette Roper, and Harley (Teri) Cooney; stepchildren, Louella, Trish, and Charlene; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Barbara Henage and Alice Merkley; her brother Charles Boyd; as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Her family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Ashley Manor in Jerome for their excellent care and consideration, as well as Dr. Ferrara and St. Luke’s Medical Center Twin Falls for their care and kindness during this last year.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, October 7, 2023, at Farnsworth Mortuary, 1343 S Lincoln Ave, Jerome, Idaho.
