Shoshone- Gary Sermon Kinghorn, 81, of Shoshone, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday October 18, 2015. He was born December 3, 1933, in Rigby, Idaho, the second of six children born to William Campbell Kinghorn, Jr., and Alta Deloris Sermon Kinghorn. Gary attended elementary school in Lewisville, Idaho and one year at Midway High School before it burned down. He graduated from Rigby High School in 1952. Following high school, he worked for Clement Brothers in Lewisville.
On May 14, 1954, he married Gwen Nina Young in Rexburg, Idaho. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. They were blessed with three sons.
On May 9, 1955, he started working for the Idaho Transportation Department as an equipment operator. He was promoted to District Maintenance Clerk at the Rigby office on August 1, 1959, and on October 1, 1966, he was promoted Maintenance Foreman at the Rupert office. Finally, on October 1, 1967, he was promoted to District Business manager at district headquarters in Shoshone, where he completed over 35 years of service before retiring on September 1, 1990.
Gary enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and camping with his family. He continued family camping trips well into his senior years. These trips included his grandchildren and great-grandchildren whenever they could get together. Gary was a member of the Jefferson County Mounted Posse before transferring to Rupert. He was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings, including Ward and Stake Sunday School presidency, High Council member, Ward Clerk and High Priest Group Leader. The calling he enjoyed the most was working with his wife, Gwen, for eight years, as ordinance workers in the Boise LDS Temple.
Gary is survived by his sweetheart of 61 years, Gwen Kinghorn of Shoshone; their three sons, Gary J. (Cindy) of Pocatello, Bryan C. of Boise and Blake (Kim) also of Boise. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and many extended family members and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Billy Dale Kinghorn.
A visitation will be Thursday evening, October 22, 2015, at the Shoshone LDS Church, 507 N Greenwood, Shoshone, where family and friends may call from 6-8 PM. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Friday October 23, 2015, also at the Shoshone LDS Church, with Bishop Bob Thueson officiating. A visitation will begin one hour prior to the service.
