JEROME- Ellis Leo Coates, 96, of Jerome, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 25, 2015, in Jerome.
He was born Oct. 14, 1918, in Filer, Idaho, the son of Ellis Lee Coates and Della Harris Coates. Leo was raised in Filer and graduated from Filer High School in 1936. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II. On Jan. 16, 1943, he married Louise Cobb. They made their home in Jerome, where they raised two sons. Leo's working years were spent farming and delivering mail - a job he loved and retired from. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing. Leo was a proud veteran and belonged to the American Legion, where he was a post member for 66 years. He was also a member of Jerome Masonic Lodge 61, A.F. and A.M., and Shrine Club for more than 50 years. Following the passing of Louise, he married Lulu Mae Correll on Aug. 5, 2001. They enjoyed traveling and playing pinochle together and worshipping at the United Methodist Church in Jerome.
Leo is survived by his wife, Lulu Mae Coates of Jerome; his sons, Larry (Lois) Coates of Salt Lake City and Dale (Elizabeth) Coates of Denver; stepson, Charles (Lynn) Correll of Jerome; and stepdaughter, Charlene (Aaron) Hadden of Pilot Rock, Ore.; his grandchildren, Kim (Dustin) McKinney, Todd (Kimberly) Coates, Corrine (Brian) Taylor and Brandon Coates; and his great-grandchildren, Braxton, Sierra, Emily, Ryan and Corbin. He is also survived by many extended family members and friends.
Leo is preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Louise, and his sister, Shirley Peck.
A service of celebration and remembrance will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 6, at Farnsworth Mortuary, 1343 S. Lincoln in Jerome, with the Rev. Robin Yim presiding.
