Bernadine Miller

July 9, 1924 — February 3, 2015

Jerome- Bernadine Miller, 90, formerly of Jerome, died on Tuesday, February 3, 2015, in Twin Falls.

Bernie was born on July 9, 1924 in Sterling, Colorado to Leamon Hugh Bartholomew and Hattie Bell Gabel.  She joined older sisters Dorothy and Arlyane, and younger brother Milton Lee was added to the family while they were still in Colorado.   After moving to Jerome, brother Bill and sister Jeanne completed the family.

Bernie graduated from Jerome High School in 1942, then earned her teaching certificate from Albion Normal School.  She later attended ISU and earned her Bachelor degree in 1971.  Her long career of teaching elementary grades started at Pleasant Plains School and ended at Washington Elementary in Jerome, when she retired in 1984 after teaching for 40 years.  During that time she touched many young lives while teaching at most of the elementary schools in Jerome County, including Hazelton Elementary.

Bernie married Vernon H. Miller on July 25, 1945 in Boise.  They lived in Boise, Gooding, Buhl, Hunt, and Jerome.  Daughter Susan graduated from Valley High School while the family was living in Hunt.

She enjoyed an active life.  In addition to being involved with the Albion Alumni Association, she was a 4-H leader, secretary of Canyonside Grange, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, and was a dedicated member of the First Christian Church of Jerome.   For many years she was active with the Silver Sneakers program at the Jerome Senior Center and enjoyed her association there.

Family events were very important to her.  She looked forward to the Bartholomew Reunions held every other year, and attended several Gabel Reunions in Colorado.  She enjoyed parades and rodeos, and shopping with her sisters.  She once attended the Tournament of Roses Parade in the company of several good friends.  A highlight of her life was traveling to Germany with her sister Jeanne and other family members to visit a niece who was living there.

Bernie is survived by sisters Dorothy (Mac) Ambrose of Jerome, and Jeanne Altman of Osseo, Minn; and brothers ML Bartholomew of Roseburg, OR, and Bill (Norma) Bartholomew of Jerome, along with many nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly.  She is also survived by David and Wendy Giles of Jerome and by Amber, McKenzie, and Madison of Richfield who she loved and considered family.

She was preceded in death by her husband Vern, her beloved daughter Susan Giles, and her parents.  Her sister Arlyane Andrus and husband Ted, and in-laws Irving Altman and Gladys Bartholomew also preceded her.

Bernie will be remembered at a memorial service at 1:00 PM, Saturday, March 14, 2015, at Farnsworth Mortuary, 1343 South Lincoln, Jerome.  In consideration of her love of reading and learning, memorial donations in her name may be made to:  Jerome Library Foundation, 100 1 st Ave. East, Jerome, ID  83338.
